Well that was an educational and fun experience with my carpenter friend.
I opted for his idea and made the deck water tight with fiberglass/resin/texture/ and paint over the T1 11 5/8" ply.
All wood was pre-painted on all sides.
I ran premium landscape cloth between the reed mats (inner and outer) to block visibility because we live in close quarters to others. Another reason why it's tall.
18"x18"x18" concrete holes for the 6x6 posts.
The ledger was lagged into the house strong and also the joists were tied into the old balcony joists. They still had good wood on the stub outs.
It's a tank.
It really adds to our bedroom!
Here's some pictures.

I like it!

(3,426 posts)The natural look with a bit of a shine to it. And it looks like you zero'ed in on the time factor pretty much in exacts. Not bad at all in your method of estimating !
The whole project in the way it came about is a beautiful thing.
Looking forward to viewing your project with all the finishing touches !
Truly, a great job all around.
And compliments to your friend the builder.
Being an old guy myself I feel a bit of inspiration in this construction design work of art.
And it's functional !

(28,136 posts)I think if I did it over I'd build the sides 1 foot shorter however the added privacy is nice since these are close quarters where we live.
