Sewer issues?

I have an issue at one of my rental houses. The guy who always did the sewer line cleanouts for me told me I had a broken line, and referred someone. Well, I got a couple of bids, and it's EXPENSIVE!!!

Today someone my son referred me to asked about the cleanouts I'd had done, specifically the type of equipment that was used. Long story short, tomorrow they're going to try hydro jetting. It's $250 per hour, but maybe it'll work and I won't even need a new line. I just wanted to let anyone who ever has an issue with their sewer line that this is an option. It's supposed to blow out everything, including tree roots.

1. Did they use an in-line camera and did they let you see the trees, etc., that are in the lines? I

had that issue on a house I was watching for a friend and the quote was $6,500. I called Roto-Rooter and they were able to cut the trees parts that had broken into the line and patch the line. I watched the whole process on their camera and it cost only about $500. That was almost 10 years ago.

2. It's been an ordeal

I did have the line scoped, and I sent the link of the footage to my son. I tried to figure it out, but it made no sense to me, but my son is smarter than me.

I just called the company and asked them to run a scope after it's (hopefully) cleaned out, so that's going to happen. That way my son will be able to see if there's actual damage to the line, and where it is. He has a friend who used to do that type of work, and my son knows how to operate heavy equipment, so if something needs to be done they'll hopefully be able to save me thousands of dollars.

I'll just add, the tenants have been super understanding, and hopefully it's helping that I told them no rent would be due while this is going on. I won't charge them for October at all, no matter what.

3. The "scope' on my property disclosed that the pipe broke. Half of it was on top of the other and

just draining into the street. That obviously was not the case with your rental.

Lucky, I had sewer line insurance from the water company and the whole thing cost a $50 deductible.

4. That's great for you!

I'm eager to see what I find out tomorrow. Even if it's just a temporary fix, it'll help. My sons want to do the work to help out their favorite mom. This thing just happened at a bad time. One of them is so busy he doesn't know if he's coming or going, and the other just had surgery so has to watch his activity for a couple of weeks.

I'm so fortunate to have my wonderful family. I don't know how I'd make it through the little messes in life without them.

5. I never would have guess

The problem turned out to be that whoever the power company had put in a new pole put that new pole on top of my line. I was shocked, but the guy from the construction company who came out to call for locates, etc., said it happens more than you'd think. So, great news for me.....this isn't going to cost me anything. Well, unless the power company doesn't reimburse me for the lost rent.
