Long 'tree' between neighbor's yard and mine. Note small green ones above and below ripe maroon fruit.

(16,530 posts)She made the BEST fig preserves in the world. I miss those.
Also, I learned that wild fig trees utilize fig wasps to pollinate and make the fruit. They dissolve the wasp with special enzymes and it becomes part of the fruit. Commercial fig producers use another method, but I think the dead wasp goo in wild figs is so cool. That's probably what made my mee-maw's figs so good.

(117,539 posts)The last time my parents moved the neighbor had a fig tree that hung over the alley and the neighbors encouraged to all that she wanted. My mom broke open the canning equipment and put 4 quarts of fig jam in reserve.

(7,064 posts)That's what I get for listening to people who don't know anything. They are self pollinating. My bad.
