but she'd do it from a standing height directly on the stain. I noticed some other grandmothers must have known that trick as there are a couple of internet "stain gurus" who mention it. Just don't spill/splash on yourself.

I've personally had luck soaking in a dilute Dawn dish soap with a bit of white vinegar--and you can use cold water that way (a lot safer). It might take an overnight soak, though.
