The lost dog of a migrant family that was separated from her loved ones for months before finally being found in Del Rio by the leader of a Laredo pets organization is finally going to reunite with her family.
The nearly 1-year-old Miniature Pinscher Chihuahua named "Chiripa," or "Fluke" in English, boarded a van as she was set to travel from Laredo to eventually New York City beginning Saturday.
The journey will hopefully reunite her with the Milano family, who traveled with their beloved pet from Venezuela to the United States on a three-month journey before making their asylum claim in the U.S. in May. However, the dog was provided to a facility and then given away for adoption while they were bused away from Texas to New York City, per Gov. Greg Abbott's policy on sending arriving migrants out of Texas.
Chiripa's owners include Delwin and Esther Milano and their 5-year-old daughter Asharella. They decided to leave their difficult life in Venezuela, as violence in the area along with a scarcity of food and lack of job opportunities led them to seeking a better situation. But after navigating 3,000 miles across 10 countries, it wasn't until the U.S. when they were separated from the furry member of their family.
