(154,549 posts)We have bearded collies. We used to compete in herding competitions. It is fun watching the various breeds herd in very different ways. Borders are like little wolves and use a strong eye and occasional nips. Beardies bounce around and herd by bouncing around the sheep. Corgis are meant to herd cattle and occasionally the test herd of sheep figure out that they can outrun the corgis.

(154,549 posts)We also used to who a couple of our beardies and so corgis were in the herding group. If you watch the herding group for the big TV dog shows you will see two different corgie breeds in the group
All of the herding trials that I have been at use sheep (the is a chicken contest also at some meets). Corgis were bred for cattle and herd by nipping at the heels of the sheep. Corgis do fine with sheep unless the sheep figure that they can outrun the corgis. This has only happened at two of the meets that I attended and there was a ton of mud at one of these events
