Question: are there portable chip readers? I need to see if my "new" cat has a chip.

Background: a rather exotic (maybe expensive) adult, well-fed, lovable cat has taken up residence on my property (and, yes I've opened up the garage to her). AND my dear husband has been feeding her (and petting her). This has been going on for about a month. I've seen no postings for this type of lost cat. And quite frankly we have enough geriatric rescues (we're becoming known as the cat house of the neighborhood).

I tried to put her in a cat carrier to bring her to a Vet, but she wasn't having it.

My son told me to be careful about posting a "found" ad because someone may lay claim due to her breed.

So any advice would be helpful. We're falling for this sweetie, and I'm sure someone misses her.

1. If you have a long term trusting relationship with your vet, they might let you borrow a scanner.

They aren't cheap and most clinics probably only have one.

Or it might be possible to get animal control to come out, but they, of course, would likely want to take the cat in--especially if they find a chip.

I'd keep on alert for her missing 'specifically'. As was advised here, I also would choose not to advertise her. You never know.

Give it some time. She may have been deliberately let loose.

happened to one of our rescues), or she was just too much for her human owners, or....... I don't know, but she sure is a cutie.

And they aren't cheap, so you probably don't want to buy your own, even though you can.

Yeah. Ask your clinic. Have a pad and paper handy, as the number disappears off the screen faster than you think. Even if the cat doesn't.

4. Maybe you could offer your vet a hefty deposit to borrow

For however long it would take you to do a round trip & scan kitty.

Explain you can't get kitty in carrier & you're not posting online, but want to find owner, if kitty is chipped.

I'd think any vet would help!

8. I suggest you try to borrow it at their closing time

with a deposit, and then bring it back first thing in the morning when they open. They aren't scanning anyone at night!

might not insist on taking her. i’ve known them to let them stay, but take a report so that the owners can contact you.
lotsa lost pet posts on a couple fb pages i follow and notify animal control is always the advice. both in chgo and in my suburban hometown. they’re usually happy not to have to care for the animal.. but animal control is 1 of the 1st places ppl will look.
and if it has a chip, they’ll make sure it gets home. folks usually have good things to say when there’s a reunion.

maybe check some local fb pages, and just ask about experience w locals.
there’s a lot of good ppl doing that work. dont assume.

And online neighborhood lost pet sites. I’ve checked so many places, I think I looked at animal control lost cats on line. If she’s not chipped. I’ll keep looking. Heck maybe I’ll even join facebook in order to check. DU people have really helped and I’ll next get advice from local experienced people. Thank you.
