Related: About this forumPoor Gryff had a traumatic afternoon, yesterday
When I brought Dewi in from the rain I flipped on what I thought was the light in the porch ceiling fan. Nope. It was the fan. That startled Gryff and he bolted behind a heavy piece of furniture. I tried talking softly to sooth him and thought he must have run into the den, so I tended to Dewi. He sat on my lap and we watched 'Dateline' on my laptop.
After Dewis mom picked him up, I started looking for Gryff. No sign of him so I checked behind that heavy piece of furniture and he was STILL THERE! For TWO HOURS! I finally convinced him he was OK. Things went back to normal until THUNDER. And he bolts off, again. No sooner does he venture out when, THUNDER. This happened several times.
After the storm finally ended he spent the entire night snuggled up against me. Poor baby.
And tomorrow might just bring more storms.

(7,811 posts)I'm sorry you're experiencing stormy conditions, I don't mean to make lite of it.
And I am reminded to be grateful I'm not at this moment and time experiencing the same.
Still, Gryft remains to be a clever nic-namer the slobfather.

(27,291 posts)One of the reasons I spell it in the Welsh form (Gryff) instead of Griff, is spelling it that way looks too much LIKE Grift!!
All of my kidcats have Welsh names. When I first started naming the ferals, I chose something that reflected their behavior or appearance. Hence there is Skittish, Scooter, Mittens the Kitten and Spooky. Now the newer kittens are being pulled into the Welsh naming circle, too. I know their names will be changed if they get a new home, but that's OK. I'm already recycling the name 'Dewi'.

(7,811 posts)Also I didn't even realize the OP was actually posted in the Pets forum... also my vision problems in play, thinking I saw "t" following the f. maybe it was brain insisting the word was a cute way of naming the fraudster in chief and thug "Grift" as Gryft.
hee, hee.
Generally I don't click on the "trending" column which doesn't indicate the forum the OP is posted to. Instead, I click on the LBN and General forums when I want to see if Gryft has been arrested yet.

Ember started giving wary glances at my living room window about 30 minutes before any thunder or rain. She sensed that it was coming. Soon as it started, she was behind the couch.
Poor girl. Each time after the rain stopped and she came out, another wave came through within 30 to 45 minutes. Zoom! Back behind the couch when the thunder started up again.
After the last wave ended she snuggled close to me in bed.
I wonder if the reaction of cats to storms is due to fear, to instinct to find shelter, or just to the sound since their hearing is so good.

(27,291 posts)For the most part the thunder was pretty distant but that didn't matter to the kidcats. When I went outside at about 8, there was a massive but very faint rainbow.
I just took a stroll and didn't see any unusual number of broken limbs. One tomato plant had to be re-staked. All in all I took a whole lot of unnecessary precautions but I'd rather be prepared. Now to just get through the next two days which are going to be miserably hot and humid, along with the potential for more storms. I was out at 7, this morning, and the air was absolutely thick with moisture.

(24,406 posts)to a day afterward. Storms blow across the lakes to western NY.
The thunder was not directly over us, but close enough to be pretty loud. The lightning was impressive since the storms came after dark. Iit up the entire sky as if it were day time.
We had about 4 waves. Rain in the first two was heavy but not too bad. The 3rd wave brought hard, torrential rain. I live at a busy city intersection so I use the traffic light movement to gauge the strength of the wind. Also, across the street from me there is a row of tall, narrow hemlocks bordering the neighboring yard there. I check out the movement of the treetops.
But I could not see them through the heavy rain. I'm guessing that the wind was around 45 mph. Not all that bad. No visible damage this morning when I went out for a medical appointment.
