Ah, kidcats. Never a dull moment.

Last night, at about 10:30, I went to check that the front door was locked and heard a strange humming noise. The new water fountain I bought for the kidcats, which is HEAVY, was knocked over and all of the water drained across the floor but the pump still running. Oh, great. It was tricky to set up, in the first place, and now I have to do it again!

Finally got it reassembled, refilled and flowing when Carys leapt off of the kitchen counter, sending a plant pot that was full of soil FLYING and SCATTERING! Deep breath. At least it didn't land anywhere near remaining puddled water.

Meanwhile, Sian is full of kitten energy and is racing around the house at breakneck speed. Madoc looks at me as if saying 'Kittens are so troublesome!'. Yea, right. Madoc is Sian's mentor when it comes to being mischievous.

I guess to make up for that they let me sleep until 6:30.

Hmmm. It's very quiet, right now. Too quiet. I'd better check on what they are up to.

fly off counters but she can open cabinets and unscrew bug-proof food containers. My thought to you: age does not diminish cat naughtiness. 🫤😈😸

Madoc, Gryff, Arthur, Carys and Sian. Madoc and Arthur are brothers. Sian is Carys' aunt. Madoc was gifted to me by my vet. I've found homes for another 5 kittens that I socialized.

I didn't PLAN on this many but I couldn't really socialize Carys so there was no hope to find her a home and I didn't want to release her back outside, even though she's spayed. Some days she's comfortable hanging out with me and some days she's not.

I thought I had a home lined up for Sian but that fell through, and then I absolutely fell in love with her so now she's the official house 'Spider Monkey' kitten and is an absolute delight.

Fortunate I have far more room than I need in this house.

Right now there are 4 or 5 every day adults, 2 totally feral kittens and 6 formally feral but now socialized kittens.

There were 2 confirmed tom cats in this 'territory' but they are both gone. I keep watching for a new one to show up.

Unfortunately the adults are pretty trap shy. 3 of the socialized kittens, all males, should be big enough for me to take for neutering. I have a friend coming to visit who is VERY experience in rescue work so maybe we can get the boys taken care of and she can also help with the bigger cats.

I wish we had a TNR organization in the area but, unfortunately, we don't. There is a rescue organization that does less expensive surgeries so that's where these will be taken.

The smaller kittens, all female, are still too small.

Siwsan is sort of our DU example of stepping up to the plate and we all enjoy the stories and pics of what she does, keeping in mind of course that we wish for and need more Siwsans in other areas. I know she acts as an example of what can be done because I've seen more and more posts about others reaching out similarly on behalf of animals.

In my area, we have an excellent network of TSN organizations and we also have a municipal animal rescue department, which gets cats and any other loose animals into a no-kill shelter. Of course this comes with a price tag: my property taxes are around $16,700, but I'm going to be getting some off in a year or two. (Democratic Gov. Murphy and our Democratic legislature granted a senior relief act and I'm going to qualify, I think). Our town even funds health services to immigrants without health insurance. Not unlimited, but blood tests, that sort of thing. I must admit that the higher taxes are well worth it to me, because I get upset at the sight of an animal without a home. We don't see anything like that in my town.

My brother does this type of thing. He, like Siwsan, is in an area where there is no taxpayer funded organization or even volunteer group to help. There is a loose-knit group of people who pitch in when needed, with all types of tasks from food to short-term housing, help with adoption, etc. My brother funds spay and neuter procedures with the local vet.

So that's my ad hoc definition and if anyone wants to add or take away, please do.

Yeah, and don't even ask: of course he's in a republican area that doesn't believe in taxpayer funded functions on behalf of animals.

I had a choice between him and his caramel colored sister. When I picked up Gryff he just melted into my arms. In no time he and Madoc were like littermates. He is certainly quirky but also extremely loveable.
