I'm glad I went out to check on the kittens

It's still raining and the temp is in the low 60's so I've been making an occasional check on the kittens and to make sure the shelter is staying dry inside.

I was surprised to see little Tegan with the boys in the shelter. She was dry so I wonder if she was there earlier but hidden in the back.

Her left eye was a gooey mess so I ran back to the house to get my 'eye kit' and grabbed the kibble container. She's now cleaned up and they have a bowl of kibble to munch on.

No sign of Bronwyn or Rhian so that must mean they are sheltered and dry, somewhere else. Naturally I will keep checking.

Fortunately the rain is forecast to end at about 9. I'll probably put more kibble out, just in case some of the outdoor fur babies come by, looking for a snack.

4. Hope Tegan's eye is better. My Millie is

eighteen years old and has had an eye allergy most of her life. Doctor prescribed an eye ointment that I use, as needed. It has worked like a charm.

5. They know where the shelters are by now...

So mostly where they end up is probably their choosing. Glad they huddle together like they do.

6. I'm thinking that the weather in Michigan will change sooner

than a few weeks. I'm in western NY and we are often a few hours or a day behind Michigan's weather.

For the past 4 or 5 days, we have had unusually hot temperatures for October, in the 80s F. Tomorrow's forecast high is in the 60s. Saturday's forecast high is mid 40s.

Those kitties will want to snuggle for warmth.

7. I was just looking at...

A bunch of weather sites and there is a blob of cold air coming down from Canada and moving eastward. There are freeze warnings east of the mountainous west of Montana and the eastern part of SD and stretches south into KS. It will migrate in your direction in a few days. The airmass is just east of me and traveling SSE and blasting into all the warm air everywhere else. We're teetering on frosty nights and barely seeing 70s for daily highs since last week.

9. I've decided I'm going to try letting them shelter in the back, enclosed porch

I can raise the storm window and screen on the screen door so they will have easy access. I doubt the adults will venture in but all of the kittens have already spent nights in the playpens.

It will keep them out of the wind/snow and I can put out some fluffy cat beds and old blankets for them to snuggle in. No doubt they will venture out during the day, weather permitting, and I'll just make it a point to clear that step and the sidewalk when it snows.

It's worth a try, anyway.

14. I was surprised at how they immediately figured out the purpose of the litter box.

I had a concern when I brought them all in from that bad storm but the first time I check on them, there was POOP. In the litter box!
Of course, I'll have to get at least one more. Probably a big one.

15. It's amazing how quickly they figure that part out!

The last time I brought a kitten home, a feral, I didn't know I was going to have a cat when I got up that morning. I had food on hand as I was looking to get one but a friend took me to a place where they saw her mom and thought I should take that cat. The mom had a multitude of veterinary issues and would have been really expensive to rehabilitate. But then I heard kittens and found three in the hay barn. I could only afford one so I took her home and rescued the others. When I got that little mewing bellows home, I quickly grabbed a box, put some dirt from the yard in it and set her in it and it took her one second to figure out what it was for! I bought some litter the next day. She used that until I started letting her outside after she was spayed. I kept a box in the house in winter but she never used it unless it was -20F or colder. She had her own door so she was happier going outside.
