There is still a lot to learn about the mysterious and sometimes fatal respiratory illness affecting dogs across the country, but two things are for sure: The bacteria-like organism causing the infections has a weird genetic makeup that is taking some time to understand, and its probably best to keep your dogs home from the holiday gatherings.
Snip... advice for pet owners from veterinarians, which is to keep your dog away from other dogs and social settings right now. So traveling with them on planes or bringing them around other family dogs during the holidays might not be the safest.
The infection is definitely not COVID-19, snip...
A graduate student at the Hubbard Center named Lawrence Gordon continued to pore through the samples after the initial sequencing. Needle said in 21 of the 30, he found a small segment of the DNA thats related to a previously not described bacteria."
"Its a very small bacteria with a small genome and a weird genome, said Needle. So the most we can say is theres potentially this bacteria there.

(41,302 posts)I called to ask her for advice. She told me to keep my dog home and keep hm away from other dogs for the next month.
She said exactly what this article said. Even though I don't live in a state that has a big outbreak, she told me her practice is seeing dogs that are sick with this mysterious respiratory illness. "Lots of coughing dogs" she told me. Some of them have developed pneumonia. I think this is really scary.

(33,386 posts)I'm also *that* human . . .
The one who has a brachycephalic Maltese who back coughs - and at least once a year runs to his vet because I'm convinced his trachea is collapsing.
This is a point of stress for his vet. He knows Im out there . . . somewhere . . . watching for symptoms. Ready to make another panicked call . . . like I did last Saturday.
I'm seriously freaked out about it this.

(10,304 posts)dogs. Every single shelter in Georgia is FULL of dogs that have been abandoned by humans. Many of them are closed to intake because of overcrowding. This is scary.
