Look at what I found this morning, abandoned, wet and cold.

Last edited Tue May 7, 2024, 04:52 PM - Edit history (1)

I grabbed a towel and started drying, warming and trying to stimulate some movement, which I finally did, probably with very little time to spare. Then it was off to a heating pad. It took a while but then I heard squeaking. I'm putting the age at 2 or 3 days.

Way too early to even guess a gender but I'm leaning towards a girl. She is now warm, dry, with a full belly and I even managed to get her to poop. She seems pretty strong. When she's not sleeping or eating, she's squeaking up a storm and likes to climb up on to my shoulder and snuggle against my neck. She's not quite 4 oz but that's about right for the age.

I realize the success rate for rescues this young is pretty low but what else could I do? So, lots of minimal sleep nights for the next couple of weeks but it will be worth if if I can save her. Or him. Only time will tell.

Any positive vibes will be most appreciated.

If s/he seems to be thriving, eating, pooping, mewing, kneeding, cuddling, tgen you're doing ok. If s/he becomes lethargic and belly seems distended or no poop, see a vet if you can afford it. Or call an animal rescue organization in your area.

Big hugs from me and my feral tribe of TNR'd kitties.

I also hold her right over my heart and she falls asleep. I found a pouch that is the perfect size for her so I can tote her around with me, although hopefully she will sleep. A lot.

Honestly, she was so cold when I found her that I was sure I was too late. It reminded me of when I found Tudor after that awful storm, last year. Then there was that one flicker of a movement and such relief washed over me.

I checked her for fleas and did find one. Her coat is so thin, at this point, that they should be easy to spot, and I WILL keep checking.

I'm going to spend the night in the recliner. Right now she's on my chest doing a great impression of a squeaky wiggle worm so she has energy. She's been pooping like a champ. She's actually the best pooper I've ever rescued.

I have an appointment with my therapist tomorrow. I wish I could put her in my bag and take her with me but they have a strict 'No Animals. No Exceptions' rule in the office. Fortunately it's a short drive so I'll be home in less than 90 minutes. I'll put her in the guest room to keep the curious kidcats at bay.

My neighbor had run into my house yelling "can you save this?" She was ice cold to the touch so I thought she was dead. I filled a ziplock bag with warm water, put her under my shirt and held the warm bag over her. When she started to shiver, I took her out and laid her on the warm bag and put a Visine bottle filled with warm canned milk in her mouth. I was amazed when she started to suck on it. When hubby got home from work he went to Wally World and got kitty formula and a couple nursing bottles. I fed her every two hours for 5 weeks. I named her Wonder because it is a wonder she is alive. She still thinks I am her mother. She is the queen of the house and lays on top of me at night to sleep. She is more than 15 and is showing her age. I now have 5 rescues altogether. All are neutered and are inside cats since I live on what was a main highway before the interstate was built.

Think. Again.

43. on a side note...
Tue May 7, 2024, 05:10 PM
May 2024

...many towns or counties have volunteer groups that "catch and release" feral animals. They 'catch' them, have them spayed or neutered if old enough, give them any of the needed shots for life on the streets, usually nip an ear to let everyone know they have been properly vaccinated, give them a little love and cuddlng and set them back where they were found to rejoin their friends.

If you suspect this precious little one is the child of a stray, you may try to locate and reach out to such a group in your area and possibly help them to locate and care for her mom and dad, so that more babies don't suffer the fate of her sibling.

Tue May 7, 2024, 05:15 PM
May 2024

They lived to be 16 and 17, if I recall correctly.

Some jerk had a habit of dropping off newborns at a local cat store. This was about the 5th litter he's dropped off at the same age.

Both turned into $1000 "free" cats. One tried to swallow a spool of thread an inch at a time and got it wrapped around her tongue. The other developed a paralyzed larynx (which cats apparently never get, but she did). Both died of old age, choosing times suites to their personalities - one when I was out of town, the other waited until I came home from work so I could hold her on my chest as she left the world.

Hope this little one has a long happy life.

Wed May 8, 2024, 01:21 PM
May 2024

that the babies get abandoned. Sometimes they just get lost when mom is trying to move them, especially in bad weather. Mom gets spooked by something, or exhausted, or baby gets left behind somehow. There may not be a thing wrong with her. Or she may just be the runt of the litter and Mom moved the bigger ones first and then ran out of energy. Anything's possible. But with you taking care of her I'm pretty sure she's going to be okay. Maybe we should rename your house the Florence Kittenton Home, as we used to call a friend's house when she had litters of bottle baby kittens from the shelter.
