Related: About this forumThe moment Michelle Obama started speaking, Carys came out of hiding.
She RACED across the room and jumped on the TV tray that's next to where I was sitting. What followed was a lovely stretch of time where she just wanted lots of attention. Then, right about the time Barack took the stage, she settled down and let me give her many more pets and scritches.
Of course, this morning she was back to hiding beneath the other chair that's in the den so that's where I served her breakfast. She's a very puzzling little girl.

(27,309 posts)Last night she was nuzzling Gryff. It's wonderful to see her interacting with the boys.
I do get the occasional slow blink from Carys. I just wish I could have caught her when she was younger. I might have been able to fully socialize her.

(120,281 posts)though it will take a little more time and the patience and love that you show the babies every day, that she will be fully socialized. In the meantime, you get these special, precious moments.

(27,309 posts)She was even purring, last night. I rarely ever get to hear her purr.

(92,948 posts)She wants to be included but doesn't feel secure about something. I wonder what it its that keeps her in hiding. That being said, she's still young and may eventually decide it's okay to be out and about with everyone else.
It's good that she has some kind of relationship with the boys. There's still time. She knows who feeds her and keeps her safe. Maybe she wonders why she's inside and the others are outside. I can't remember how old she is but I think after a winter she sill see more clearly the benefits of being an indoor kitty and realize she's in a good and safe place.
Who knows?

(2,787 posts)She's very anxious and shy, one could describe her as a bit neurotic. All three of my critters are siblings from the same litter, adopted as kittens. Ulthar Ynxpaht, the male, is dominant and has bullied her around a bit.
My usual procedure is to be relentless in showing her affection. I speak to her softly, don't make sudden movements and never pet her without asking permission with an extended hand and slow blinks. She's slowly responding to my efforts. At my breakfast time, she'll casually saunter by me, and touch my leg with her tail, soliciting pets. On occasion, she'll hop up on the couch near me. If I take an afternoon siesta, she actually snuggles up and gives me a few head butting. I love those moments!

(27,309 posts)I'll hold out my hand and she will sniff it. Sometimes she lets me scratch her nose. I just don't push it. When she's out in the open and I walk past her, I always softly talk to her and slow blink. Sometimes she returns the blink.
On rare occasions she's jumped up on the bed, in the middle of the night, and head butted me awake. I give her as much time and affection as she wants. Sometimes she curls up and goes to sleep but more often she wanders off to someplace else to sleep.

(2,787 posts)All three sleep with me in the winter, when my waterbed heater is on. (I think I'm the sole support of the international waterbed industry!) The Grey Mouser cuddles up to my back, Ulthar and Miss Katonic sleep on opposite corners of the bed's foot.

(35,892 posts)Im getting a little worried about Patches, hes got this itchy situation, and I can feel scaly little scabs under his fur. He seems OK otherwise, though this morning I got up a little bit late and he stayed in bed that really worried me. But just showed a burst of energy, crashing out the door and trying to get up the post on the deck. So whatever is bothering him it doesnt seem to be affecting his overall health. Ive never taken him to the vet except when I first brought him in. Hes big and strong and willful , not sure what to do. I worry about topical medicines on cats. Have you ever seen anything like this?
