NYC Historic Roosevelt House: FDR & Eleanor Home, Where The New Deal Happened

(26 mins). The program includes writer Jon Meacham and the president of Hunter College, Jennifer Raab. In spring 2010 after extensive renovation Roosevelt House, the E. 65th St. home of FDR and Eleanor was re-opened as the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College.

Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt had many famous homes: Hyde Park, Campobello, Warm Springs and The White House, but few people know the story of the New York City home built in 1908 where the Roosevelts spent 24 years.

It was in Roosevelt House that Franklin Roosevelt recovered from polio, celebrated his election to the Presidency in 1932, and where he planned the New Deal. Today, the house is owned by Hunter College.

closed for many of the years I was going to NY; glad to see it's renovated and in good use. I love historic properties and worked in the field a good deal.

R. properties. It's on the list, Hyde Park too and esp. the Roosevelt Hs. on 65th, I think it was closed for a long while and glad to see it renovated and thriving.

My sister took classes post- grad at Hunter when she was living there; brother and mother also lived in the city. I was there a lot, until the last 10 years or so, last times it was mostly to visit friends on LI and my cousin in town.

*WE need an updated movie on FDR & Eleanor, badly. The last w Bill Murray, Hyde Park on the Hudson was ok, not great.

Ya got Portland and Freeport and a couple of interesting towns along the way... after that, unincorporated townships with numbers, not names.

One of the towns had a lighthouse which is fogged in 180 days a year. I was there and there was a cloud bank on the horizon. It got closer over the span of about two hours and then closed in over the lighthouse. At that point, it was difficult to drive.

I suspect passports are now required to go to Campobello. Staff is very welcome to Americans. If yo go, you also need a special insurance id card to cover you in case of an accident in Canada.
