On November 13, 1957, the Longview, Texas, chapter of the NAACP refused to disclose its membership.

The officials were jailed the next day.

65 years ago today, the NAACP stood up against government attempts to force to disclose their membership.

In 1958, in NAACP v. Alabama, the US Supreme Court found such forced disclosure laws unconstitutional under the 1st Am right to association.

Things didn't change for the better in the Jim Crow region, and then-Senator LBJ had not yet emerged to go on record as a civil rights champion. States' rights and absolute autonomy of local law enforcement were the order of the day. It's unsettling that so many on the right are intent on reverting back to that era.
