There has to be a date after which we can say that those people died for nothing. The day when the most trusted journalist in modern times told us it was futile to go on is as good a date as any.

cause LBJ to declare that he would not run... only to be replaced by Hubert Humphrey... who promptly lost to Nixon and the Vietnam war continued ( and even escalated ) for the next almost 6 years.
