Gun owning liberal and watching Baggars shoot at a range

I'm not going to lie. I own three - two 38 snubbies (1 SW 19 and 1 SW Centennial) and one 12-guage. The 12 and 19 are at my parent's home locked away and the Cent is in a combo lock box underneath the bed for home defense. Have taken the CCW course in my area, 12 hours, but have never concealed due to being uncomfortable doing so.

My son, age 3, has never been shown it, nor do I ever intend on showing him it. I don't even like having it all that much, however, our home has had two attempted break ins over the past 10 years, an alarm has been installed and the police when contacted, when those two attempted break ins occurred, seemed rather indifferent about both instances. So, I found myself in between a rock and a hard place.

Now, I know that gun ownership CAN - I didn't say is - but can be seen as taboo by fellow liberals. And, they do have the full right to see it as such. But, I am curious about what others do say about it in regards to food for thought and not a means to argue, flame or go all wingnut on.

To watching Baggars...

Ranges absolutely love the Baggar bunch. Most of them are either young guys or cranky old boomers where they act like their piece is a trophy. It's an object to shine ass and they use it like it too. Also, there are far more customers using the range now than there were ten or fifteen years ago, so you know they're loving it.

I also find ranges interesting in the sense of what Baggars are really talking about in real time - body language, their condescending attitudes and clearly rehearsed swaggering. Know thy enemy. The internet is far too limited, reduced to what you'd expect - slogans, regurgitated talking points, insults and that's about it.

My god, the paranoia of them is absolutely astounding. Posted in printed paper in various places on the walls is all from the wingnut sites I've never heard of or read about - stories and claims so insane, you'd swear it's from a different planet. None of the math adds up, no sources are listed, it's purely emotional fuel on steroids.

Now it comes to take my turn. I do fairly well. 2 or 3 out of five are on the 8 and 9 areas of the target. Then, I watch these Baggars with their DTOM and other wingnut shirts on take their turns. They move their pieces around like it's a child's toy, almost no care of where it may be pointed while handling and it's as if their peripheral vision is completely absent. One would think people with such paranoia of Obama, roving invisible gangs of hillbillies and minorities would be careful. No dice. It's a trophy and they are there to smack their units together with their fellow "treaders". People with experience do not do this sort of thing - they always have it pointed down and only raise to discharge.

After a few more turns, where the success rate is same each time, I decide to leave. I feel my skill is plenty. Then I get into the car, turn on the ignition and have this incredible sadness and worry. And it's fueled by the same question I've always had, but this time it's more intense. The question is, "What in the hell is WRONG with these people?"

I don't ever expect them to become democrats or liberals or anything like that - and I'd never ask of it or try to persuade any of them to consider it. But, this isn't the republican banter I've grown up around. Something's much different now and it's very disturbing. It's not just only when these folks listen to the Conservative Media Complex - they seem like making it a way of life is not good enough - they want it to consume them completely. Watching them carelessly handle their weapon was almost more than I could take.

I just don't get it.

...but it's not going away neither. It's alive and sick, predominantly in the South. There is some of it up in the north country as well. We don't wave the "dixie flag", but we hate people of color, anyone who isn't as white and stupid as we are; and I'm afraid this country is going to ALWAYS have "stupid ignorance" to deal with.

It's been that way since I started traveling, back in the 60's. The peeps in Wyoming NEVER make it out of Wyoming, let alone the USA. Their gauge on what is right and American is based on what they see at the dinner table. Ignorance is alive and sick in this country. Always has been, always will be.

It's just that now "ignorance" has a voice; it's called teabaggers.

Jesus. Please tell me you stay far far away from them? And yes, it is toy to them. It makes them feel powerful, in control.

They see a black man as president, they read white people are going to be in the minority, and it's a threat to them.

Armchair Psychology! My neighbor collects firearms, believes no one needs more then 10 rounds in a magazine, and thinks the open carry showoffs are flaming idiots. He also has a locked gun safe.

I simply find it to be the same old recycled tripe. Only place they have to go to find any new stuff is to claim Obama is Z-Big's garage project made from a Sears generator, a Jacob's Ladder and a light brown tarp. Consultation for the project was funded by by David Rockefeller, George Soros and (insert ten different Jewish names here).

First off, I did not see action. My service in the Air National Guard was peacetime...well, if you call making sure Russian bombers did not intrude into U.S. airspace "peacetime."

I served with a lot of people who did see action, mostly in Vietnam. The Brigadier General who commanded my wing had been a fighter pilot over Vietnam, getting shot at with real bullets and real SAM's. However, it was extremely rare for them to even talk much about it, let alone brag.

When people ask what I did, I just tell them that I showed up, did what I was told (for the most part!) and got a piece of paper that said I had served and been a good boy.

It sounds like you are THE responsible gun owner. Took the safety course, practices at the range, has a healthy respect and fear for what the guns can do.

My dad would be appalled at the behavior you describe. The carelessness with which those people were handling weapons. He always taught us to be aware of where the gun was pointed and always treat every gun as if it were loaded. While hunting, the gun was always pointed down as you mention. This had everything to do with the safety of the others with whom you were hunting. Also, always make sure you know what's behind that at which you are shooting. In the woods hunting, sometimes that's not so easy to know so one might not take a shot at game if one didn't know where the bullet might end up.

They're a tool, like oh say a chainsaw: observe all safety rules, learn how to handle it, and for gods sake, respect what it can do and keep that bit of fear inside: it'll keep you from being reckless or taking chances. ( I'm also thinking of power take off shafts on tractors. same principle as guns.)

Any instance of not showing public support of President Obama for fear of what some crazed RW type might do just gives them power they do not have or deserve.

On another thread I mentioned an instance of my wife being harassed in a McDonald's drive-thru because of the Obama bumper sticker on her car. She was unsettled by the experience, being far less experienced with confrontation (and confrontational arseholes) than I am. Had I been with her, the RW nuts would have found themselves having a markedly different reaction with the target of their foolish abuse...if they would have had the guts to even do it.

I am SO damn tired of the mindset that says LIBERALS (and I claim the term without reservation) have had to squirm over the appellation, ever since Rush Limbaugh turned it into an insult. Even here on DU, I often see the rebranding of "progressive." I don't have any trouble with that term, but the disuse of "liberal" lets Limbaugh and his ilk win.

Personally, I can handle a weapon as well as any RW NRA zealot. I've been doing so ever since winning marksmanship badges (ironically issued by the NRA!) as a Boy Scout in the '70s.

who hone their skills frequently at a range (instead of in the back yard) and secure their guns away from kids at home. These gun owners are just not the problem.

The problems are all the swaggering idiots for whom guns are a fashion accessory as well as their admittance to a cult in which a gun confers such awesome power that everyone should be forced to carry openly.

I can only hope their children who survive their careless handling and storage of loaded guns at home are disgusted by the whole idea and turn the arsenal in as soon as the swaggering idiots kick the bucket for a bounty from the local police for getting massive numbers of guns off the street.

In my state, we have public ranges that are run by the state Wildlife Resources Agency. They charge a small fee per visit and they don't put up with any shit. Somebody comes in there and sweeps the firing line with the muzzle or acts like an idiot, they get thrown out immediately. And they aren't nice about it.

Sun Oct 20, 2013, 01:54 AM

Well, let's start with children. Empathy is not something we are born with, It's a combination of our own cognitive development, and learning from others.

Empathy is also more than just being able to understand another person's feelings - Even a sociopath can do that, that's simply communication, most able people can manage this just fine. No, empathy also includes the understanding that you are not the star of the show, that not only are there other people, but that those peopel are also important, but that not you, northem, are the central figures of some seventy-year personal drama story.

For whatever reasons, a lot of children don't develop that, or it becomes stunted. I'm no professional, i'm sure there are lots of reasons why - and let's not take the lazy route of blaming the parents, I've seen plenty of great parents whose kids still grow up as manipulative pricks. Who knows why, maybe it's genes, maybe it's peers, maybe it's just something that amuses the kid, maybe it's a lot of things, different for each case.

People like you describe... they all think the world is about them. That's what it comes down to, that selfishness, that inability to perceive other people as mattering, except inasmuch as they matter to that person. The reason they hate welfare, for instance, isn't because they hate the poor. They don't even fucking see the poor. No, welfare pisses them off because they think it's a slight against them, taking "their" money, and giving it to "someone else" - someone who, in their heads does not matter, and will never matter.

They buy these wacky conspiracy theories, because it's gratifying. it makes them feel special, not just because they "know" something that "isn't being reported," but also because, inevitably, these conspiracies are about someone coming to inconvenience them in someway. The UN wants to take their guns. Michelle wants to make them eat broccoli. Pelosi is going to set up death camps for christians. They don't worry about things that don't revolve around them. Something awful happening in that country over there? Will it make gas prices go up? No? don't care, then!

The conservative media complex, as you call it, doesn't create the problem. It's clearly intended to be exploitative, capitalizing on these people's paranoia and self-centeredness to make a buck. But.. .that has the effect of encouraging that sort of thing. And I suppose that's just "expanding the market" until market demands mean that the hacks squeezing money from chumps like Limbaugh, get replaced by the chumps themselves, like Beck. Oh, there's a difference there, hard though it may be to see with our liberal eyes. Pretty soon you've got a feedback loop, with paranoid self-centered fucks, telling other paranoid self-centered fucks, to go forth and be paranoid self-centered fucks.

The effect this has on the society it parasitizes off of is clearly obvious, and is, as we've been seeing recently, beginning to bite the asses of the money-squeezing hacks. The Republican reaction to the Tea Party of late is that of Victor Frankenstein upon realizing what he's done. But, like that ill-fated German doctor, their creation is not going to stop until it sees their destruction, or is itself destroyed.

I feel that way every time I go shooting. Well, unless I go to the range at about 1 a.m. to use the indoor pistol range. Nobody else goes up there at that time of night, and it's in a basement in the middle of nowhere, so I won't wake the non-existent neighbors.

Going to monthly meetings makes me want to gag, with rather pathetic cracks about Adolf Cuomo, racist jabs at Chuck Schumer for being a Jewish Nazi (figure that out, you win a prize), calls for Hillary to do unnatural things with body parts she does not have, etc. Oh, and lots about a commie Kenyan Nazi Muslim that is in a house in Washington someplace. Which is weird, because that's usually written on a picture of a centrist Hawaiian who goes to church every Sunday... go figure.

NOW, there are some (in fact, many) good ones. Some of the guys who take trap shooting super-seriously with their shotguns that cost more than my last four cars combined are generally pretty chill -- uber-competitive, but they're too busy to talk politics (and like their Medicare after 50 years at the plant). And as long as they aren't stupid about safety, the kids who bought AR-15s because they play a lot of CoD aren't that bad, either. The guys who don't shoot a lot, but come to sight in their rifle for deer season is generally pretty messy, but are usually nice and have a grasp of safety rules.

It's a few of the other ones who bug me. But it's enough to put a bad taste in your mouth, I know. I think it's time to have a liberal pistol league or something, lol.

Oh, and might I add - to everybody in this thread - this range I'm referring to with the batshit wingnuts is less than a mile south of Boner's district...and a stone's throw from Mean Jean's. I should have added that in the original post to give a fuller picture of what kind of dipshits this place is comprised of.

The area to locals is referred to as "Tri County". Boner in Butler, Jean in Warren and Hamilton County has Chabot...which locals call "Shazzbot". Although I'm not sure if Jean's still in office there. Never mind. Just illustrating the area overall.

Shazzbot is a real piece of work. Tries to go to union picnics every year to put on his "man of the people" costume and gets thrown out within five minutes. Happens every year. A complete and utter maroon.

IkeRepublican, those Tea Party shooters at the range you frequent, are they the ones who have all those unneeded "accessories" attached to their firearm to make it 'look cool'? Have you seen stuff like the picture below at the range?

(i think there's a pistol buried under all that bullshit)

From the website that had the second picture:

The AR-15 Rifle is the Men's Lego set, it’s fully customizable, easy to assemble and there are a ton of accessories for them. Everything from grips, scopes, lasers and lights can be mounted onto the AR-15 in various different configurations. But how many accessories is too much? Just like with cars, many people seem to go overboard with the accessories they add onto their ARs (and other guns for that matter) making them seem gaudy and impractical. With the AR owner above, to him more is better, personally I’m a fan of KISS principle. I keep it simple with iron sights and a foregrip, and if I’m feeling tacticool a mounted SureFire light. - See more at: http://www.armoryblog.com/firearms/rifles/how-many-accessories-is-too-much/#sthash.NzD9hdkR.dpuf

And what is your opinion of the whole "Tacti-cool" thing? Is it a fad, or a marketing gimmick, or is all that stuff necessary?

usually the range sells boxes of ammo, and it takes most of them fifty plus shots to ruin the first target, and they'll shoot all day long. I don't know why, but my pet theory is that people that aren't nuts practice shooting to become better shots. The nuts just want to make something shiny go bang.

What you described is why I don't go to public ranges. Fifteen people randomly waving guns around isn't my idea of a good time.

If I remember right, they were close to this batshit crazy over Clinton, too. It's been a while, so I can't readily recall all the conspiracy theories, but one of the huge ones was when Waco was proof Clinton was going to send the Army around to confiscate everyone's guns. There was another about abortion, sterilization, and/or mind control shit in the water back then, too. And the one about the Clintons having had more people killed than Al Capone. Maybe you just knew saner right wingers than I did.

They're always going on about Desert Eagles because they're shiny and are essentially true hand cannons. And even then they miss most of the time. A decent shot who doesn't subscribe to that baggar nonsense would tear the target in half with one round from a DE. But, they usually use the 9mm. Probably because they see DE's for armchair warriors.
