For those who want the 2nd Amendment to apply...

...only to the militia, if it was the Founder's intention to restrict individuals in the ownership of arms, why are there not laws specifically naming restrictions contemporary to the BOR?

A principle inspiration for the US Bill of Rights was Virginia's Declaration of Rights which preceded the Declaration of Independence. From the DVR:

"Section 1. That all men are by nature equally free and independent and have certain inherent rights, of which, when they enter into a state of society, they cannot, by any compact, deprive or divest their posterity; namely, the enjoyment of life and liberty, with the means of acquiring and possessing property, and pursuing and obtaining happiness and safety."
"Section 2. That all power is vested in, and consequently derived from, the people; that magistrates are their trustees and servants and at all times amenable to them."


Since self-defense is a natural and inherent right, how can a government assert a authority not possessed by right by the people of that society?

How can a natural right be redefined or suspended by a just government?

Relig-nuts want abortion to be illegal. Roe v Wade isn't going anywhere.

It is rather vital that 'the people' participate in Democracy and government. Those who misunderstand fundamentals such as rights, the basis for government authority and the relationship between freedom and responsibility are likely to make faulty decisions in their voting and campaigning for office. They will run for election and advocate counter productive laws. As judges and jurors they base their opinions and decisions on mistakes and myths.
