Contradicting statements by presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump, the NRAs top lobbyist said in an interview Sunday on This Week that patrons of the Pulse nightclub in Orlando should not have been armed.
No one thinks that people should go into a nightclub drinking and carrying firearms, said Chris Cox, executive director of the NRAs Institute for Legislative Action. That defies common sense. It also defies the law.
At a rally on Friday, Trump said the massacre would have been prevented if some of the nightclub victims had been armed.
If some of those wonderful people had guns strapped right here, right to their waste or right to their ankle, and one of the people in that room happened to have it and goes boom, boom, you know that would have been a beautiful sight folks, Trump said.
In contrast, Coxs words more closely aligned with a statement from President Obama during his visit to Orlando on Thursday.

(17,502 posts)while John Wayne's character was teaching Ron Howard's character how to shoot, he said that guns and booze do not mix.
In Florida, it is illegal for a CCW holder to carry in a bar. While Florida recognizes my Wyoming permit, it is a felony for me to enter a bar while armed in either state. Some states, like Ohio, you may carry in a bar as long as you don't drink.
Trump is also wrong when he said prevented. It likely would have mitigated the carnage, like the Westgate Mall terrorist attack, but not prevent.
If something like Ohio law, or having the employees armed is worthy of legitimate discussion. I'm agnostic on that issue.
Allowing drinking alcohol, or in-taking any other judgement impairing recreational drug, is fucking stupid.

(17,502 posts)The wife and I drove through Ohio once. That is something you would have to ask the DAs and cops in those states.
I haven't been in a night club in any state or country since my kids were born. The youngest graduated college two years ago. So, it isn't an issue to me either way.

(594 posts)...that gunpowder and alcohol don't mix. Since I don't drink alcohol in any shape or form, it has never been an issue for me.
Having armed intoxicated patrons is never a wise idea, but yeah, a legitimate armed security detail that has good training could certainly mitigate the actions of such a madman.

(49,445 posts)Mind-altering drugs and guns (as well as a few other things, like driving) don't go together.
The Orlando shooter, like other shooters and bombers before him, picked a ripe, ripe target: a building crammed full of people unlikely to be armed and that would be difficult to escape from.
Houses of worship, schools kindergarten through college, and dance clubs are ripe targets as well. As are the security lines at sports and concert venues, airports and other places of mass transportation, beaches, etc.

I think the better approach to quashing mass murders at restaurants, bars or any other crowded venue is to approach the danger in the same manner as teaching the Heimlich Maneuver or CPR:. Train enough people in taking down an attacker that in any given location there are enough folks to respond to a threat. Most will not train in any of the current or proposed procedures, but you only need a small number. LEOs and those in the military are trained to respond to a threat by running toward it, not away from it. Certainly, this is dangerous, and injuries are likely. But even a handful of people pitching furniture, bottles -- yes, and cans of beans -- accompanied by a full-on charge, can overwhelm an assailant. Something to consider when calls for proposals are made.
NOTE: No mention of firearms was uttered in the making of this proposal.
