Gun Control & RKBA
Related: About this forumGuns are being stolen from cars at triple the rate they were 10 years ago, a report finds
The rate of guns stolen from cars in the U.S. has tripled over the last decade, making them the largest source of stolen guns in the country, an analysis of FBI data by the gun safety group Everytown found.
The rate of stolen guns from cars climbed nearly every year and spiked during the coronavirus pandemic along with a major surge in weapons purchases in the U.S., according to the report, which analyzes FBI data from 337 cities in 44 states and was provided to The Associated Press.
The stolen weapons have, in some cases, turned up at crime scenes. In July 2021, a gun taken from an unlocked car in Riverside, Florida, was used to kill a 27-year-old Coast Guard member as she tried to stop a car burglary in her neighborhood.
The alarming trend underscores the need for Americans to safely secure their firearms to prevent them from getting into the hands of dangerous people, said Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Director Steve Dettelbach, whose agency has separately found links between stolen guns and violent crimes.

(13,385 posts)You deserve to have it stolen. It is embedded in my DNA that all guns must be under positive control irrespective of whether it's in a gun vault, a locked closet with a reinforced door or on your person as a concealed everyday carry (EDC).
This is one of the pillars of responsible firearm ownership.

(3,816 posts)Hospitals and dr. offices, for example. Pray tell, would one violate the law, (by carrying it in to a restricted area,) to keep your gun from being stolen, or lock it in your car? How about where you work? There have been cases of some workplaces where one isn't even to bring a firearm into the parking lot. What does one do, then? Park across the road?

(280 posts)There is no such thing as a gun-free zone, criminals and the mentally disturbed pay no attention to gun-free zones.
18 people were shot, including Gabby Giffords, and six people were killed in a "gun-free" zone by one of Gabby's deranged supporters who everybody in Pima County knew was crazy and dangerous.

(13,385 posts)Exercise a little common sense maybe? In most cases, you don't need to carry.

(3,816 posts)and decide that today is the day that I will need a gun for protection, and carry it. You must have a pretty good crystal ball.
I worked for IL Dept of Corrections. IL was the last state to allow permit carry. There was a legal allowance that "peace officers" could carry to and from work. However, until about 2000 or so, you couldn't have a firearm on state grounds. If you carried to work, you couldn't park on state property. Explain that one to me. (It was changed, someone saw the light.)

(13,385 posts)You worked around criminals and their element, which leads me to believe that you had a higher percentage of having to draw your firearm because of the element you operated in.
You would change your mind if you changed your venue.
It's not foresight but math.

(20,905 posts)if you never have had to draw your weapon and advise others they probably don't need to carry?

(13,385 posts)And drawing is a last resort since I'm probably with my wife. My first option is to E&E AF because once a round is loosed it ain't coming back.
sarisataka
(20,905 posts)since most crime is one on one or a few at most. At least that has been my experience.
I agree drawing is a last resort. If I draw, I have already completed the firing decision. Luckily de-escalation has worked for me.

(280 posts)I don't know you from a hole in the ground and I certainly wouldn't value your opinion as to what I need.
I'm capable of making that decision myself.
You do you....

(4,074 posts)When one's gun is in an unlocked car, clearly there is no gun control, even by legal owners, even when not stolen.
Those who want (legal) guns need to go through stuff to get the gun and go through even more heavy stuff if they ever lose control of the gun.
That is gun control.
Do it or lose your freedom.......
..Guaranteed bad karma follows guns and those who desire them.
Nearly every illegal gun began life in the hands of legal makers, sellers, buyer, and users.
They are the people first responsible for the guns that becoming illegal.
Tighten-up on them as well as the thieves.

(3,816 posts)should be the priority. Lock the criminals up, then see how much other restrictions you need to impose. The person that violates the law should get the hammer first, not the lawful individuals.

But I believe that committing *ANY* crime using a firearm should be life without the possibility of parole, and in solitary if you shoot anyone or at anyone other than in self defense, no exceptions or exclusions.
yagotme
(3,816 posts)Simple armed robbery, perhaps not, a very extended stay, yes, but if the firearm is discharged, I agree with you wholeheartedly on life. Can't commit the crime against the public, if you're not out in it.
The Mouth
(3,281 posts)But respectfully disagree. I think laws work best when they are simple, unambiguous, and uniformly enforced. Someone who points a gun at another person to demand from them property or anything else deserves to never see another human again except through bars.
yagotme
(3,816 posts)and will never see the light of day, as some don't want criminals to be locked up at all, even with a violent act being committed (assault, rape, etc.). Violent criminals are being released here in IL (no cash bail) and going out and committing more crimes.

*Any* unprovoked (non self-defense) attack on another person marks that attacker as unworthy of associating with other humans, ever again.

(3,816 posts)shows their lack of overall civility, and they should be removed from the public, for quite some time. The more severe the attack, the longer the removal. Up to and including permanently.
