A national divide is emerging among states over whether to track sales by gun stores.

Beginning Monday, a California law will require credit card networks like Visa and Mastercard to provide banks with special retail codes that can be assigned to gun stores in order to track their sales.
But new laws will do the exact opposite in Georgia, Iowa, Tennessee and Wyoming by banning the use of specific gun shop codes.
The conflicting laws highlight what has quietly emerged as one of the nations newest gun policy debates, dividing state capitols along familiar partisan lines.
Some Democratic lawmakers and gun-control activists hope the new retail tracking code will help financial institutions flag suspicious gun-related purchases for law enforcement agencies, potentially averting mass shootings and other crimes. Lawmakers in Colorado and New York have followed Californias lead.

(16,245 posts)The purchase records are kept by the FFL, but are turned over to the ATF if they close. The ATF also has access to the FFL's records.
The ATF is prohibited from using the information to create a registry. Currently that also means they can't create a searchable database of the sales that they do have records on.

(511 posts)If this is legal states can ask credit card companies to track the purchase of abortion drugs. Depending on the current political climate, they can also be asked to track anything the states may think needs tracking. It would also be a back-door attempt to create a list of firearms owners. This is against the law.

(3,816 posts)Women DO buy guns. Not at the rate of men, but they do. Are they going to be tracked?

(57,321 posts)Males will not tolerate their hobbies, interests and pursuits being tracked.
So women gun owners are probably safe for the time being.

(57,321 posts)Women are being treated as second class citizens.
To think they would be treated equally in any given situation is not reality.
My point is that men's activities will not be tracked.

(3,816 posts)Women participate in the shooting sports, also. Just seems you are leaving women out, as you complain about them not being treated equally. A double standard, if you will.

(3,285 posts)Voting and gun ownership should be subject to the exact same rules: if you can't get a gun, you can't vote, you should need the same amount of ID for either, and if they can track guns then they should be able to track votes.
Fortunately this will get tossed, I hope (along with every other gun law since we passed the 2nd amendment).
