Israel says Arrow-3 missile shield passes U.S. trials, warns Iran

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel’s U.S.-backed Arrow-3 ballistic missile shield has passed a series of live interception tests over Alaska, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday, casting the achievement as a warning to Iran.

ointly manufactured by U.S. firm Boeing Co, Arrow-3 is billed as capable of shooting down incoming missiles in space, an altitude that would destroy any non-conventional warheads safely. It passed its first full interception test over the Mediterranean Sea in 2015 and was deployed in Israel in 2017.

“The performance was perfect - every hit a bull’s eye,” Netanyahu, who doubles as defense minister, said in a statement announcing the three secret tests....

...Washington said last week that Iran appeared to have tested a medium-range ballistic missile that flew about 1,000 km (620 miles). Tehran said such tests were for defensive needs.

Arrow Weapon System Successfully Engages Ballistic Missile Target
DOD Missile Defense Agency
19-NEWS-0006
July 28, 2019

The Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO) of the Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D) and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) completed a successful flight test campaign with the Arrow-3 Interceptor missile.

Flight Test Arrow-01 demonstrated the Israeli Arrow Weapon System’s ability to conduct a high altitude hit-to-kill engagement. Interceptor tests were conducted that successfully destroyed target missiles. These tests were conducted at Pacific Spaceport Complex-Alaska (PSCA) in Kodiak, Alaska.

The Arrow-3 Interceptor successfully demonstrated an engagement capability against the exo-atmospheric target during the test. Although not part of the Israeli architecture, a U.S. AN-TPY2 radar participated in the test. Preliminary analysis indicates that test objectives were successfully achieved.

The Arrow Weapon System is a central part of Israel’s multi-layer defense system. The defense system is based on four operational layers: Iron Dome Defense System, David’s Sling Weapon System, the Arrow-2, and the Arrow-3.

It may not be the latest version. They were apparently unable to track the first Iskander type test launch from Wonsan North Korea, at least in the lower altitude phase of the flight outside the descent over the East Sea at about 400km. The explanation had to do with the course of the flight and the unique flight profile of the missile. One wonders whether Japanese Aegis Ashore facilities could track the entire flight path. In any case the performance of the South Korean Green Pine last week appears to have been a little short of "perfect." The Korean Office of the Joint Chiefs gave assurances that they could track missile threats over the entire Korean peninsula.

The descriptions of the testing describe the use of a US tracking radar in conjunction with the Arrow 3 missile test. It's not clear from the two reports if a newer upgraded version of the Green Pine was used as well.
