AMD to partner on world's fastest supercomputer
Advanced Micro Devices will partner with Hewlett Packard Enterprise to deliver what some -- including the U.S. Department of Defense -- say will be the fastest supercomputer in the world.
AMD said it will be providing its next generation Epyc central processing units (or CPUs) and Radeon Instinct graphics processing units (GPUs) to power the supercomputer, which is to be named El Capitan. AMD will also provide software to will manage the system.
The U.S. Department of Energy announced in August that it had struck a $600 million deal with Cray Inc., a Seattle-based company, to build El Capitan, an “exascale” class supercomputer to support the National Nuclear Security Administration.
In the world of supercomputers, exascale refers to the ability for a computer to execute at least one “exaflop,” which is equal to a quintillion (that’s 18 zeros) calculations per second.
