Va. bills that offer job help for vets, spouses advance

Two bills championed by local state senators to provide job help for some veterans and their spouses are moving along in Richmond.

Sen. Frank Wagner, a Republican from Virginia Beach, sponsored SB516, which would clarify that private employers in Virginia may offer preferences in hiring and promotion to veterans with a “service-connected permanent and total disability” – or their spouses.

Noting the sacrifices made by military personnel and their families, Wagner said Friday: “Shouldn’t we grant them the same preferences that we grant other folks?”

It’s important to cover spouses, he said, because “in many cases the totally disabled veteran may not be able to work at all.”

Now I don't know if they do this already, but for P&T disabled vets I hope that they provide a stipend to the wives/kids of those families too as I'm sure that they make sacrifices on their own careers and lives to take care of their disabled veteran.

A totally disabled veteran is more than just a burden to themselves. They impact their families significantly too. I have a cousin that is 100% disabled and his mother is his primary caretaker. She'll never be able to go back to work full time unless he is placed in an institution.
