Gov. Scott Walker's actions are a disservice to veterans

Gov. Scott Walker says he has the utmost gratitude and respect for the women and men who wear the uniform in service of our country.

However, the governor's record on issues that affect veterans tells a different story.

Last week, Walker signed Assembly Bill 19 into law, which makes it harder for Wisconsinites to pursue legal remedies and compensation for illnesses related to repeated exposure to asbestos, including mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that disproportionately affects veterans.

The bill was opposed by veterans groups such as the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Wisconsin American Legion and Wisconsin Veterans of Foreign Wars.

However, it was supported by the state's largest business lobby, Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce, whose lobbyist had a hand in writing the bill. The message Walker has sent to those who have worn our country's uniform is clear: Corporate special interests come before veterans.

Adding insult to injury, according to a recent report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, a key Walker policy adviser told veterans to "back off" from trying to convince the governor to veto the bill because it "will not make a difference and will only irritate him."
