Battle of Mogadishu

Last edited Tue Mar 16, 2021, 06:54 PM - Edit history (2)

I got out of the Army in 93.

I later became friends with several of the Task Force Ranger and the 5th Special Forces detachment that was ordered to “Hold in place” while TF Ranger had to stand on its own .

I also met several of the 10th Mountain guys and one guy from an engineer unit that was there to help.

They said it’s the most evil place they ever served. Those were soldiers who saw the sectarian violence in Iraq. They said it was completely understandable while everyone pulled out. The whole system couldn’t be changed.

I hope we do a better job of preparing our military for what they see.

I added for more context

Here’s a link

In January 1991, Somali President Mohamed Siad Barre was overthrown by a coalition of opposing clans, precipitating the Somali Civil War.[10] The Somali National Army concurrently disbanded, and some former soldiers reconstituted as irregular regional forces or joined the clan militias.[

Of course, GW Bush sent our asses over there with one month left in his term, leaving a steaming pile for Clinton. 10th Mountain had established security in and around Mogadishu (and other areas) for the purpose of moving food to starving people. That was the initial mission. Then the generals convinced Clinton to start "nation building" operations after 22 Pakistanis got killed in an ambush. Dumbass Pakistanis had their own problems. TF Ranger came in and started flying around Mogadishu like it was a fucking training event. Totally failed to coordinate with 10th Mountain and were acting like immortal supermen. Got their asses shot down and 10th Mountain had to jump through their asses to the rescue. I blame Gen. Garrison for the stupid attitude and actions of TF Ranger. If they had looked at what 10th Mountain had done and learned, it would have saved them a lot of grief. After that shit happened, Clinton said "get the fuck outta there," which was the right answer. Still took about six months to unass the AO.
