(6,352 posts)Where my folks lived, there was a bobcat named Narf. We didn't figure out for years that it was a bobcat. It was just this creature out there in the dark, in the woods and the fields, that could sometimes be heard to go, "narf. narf."
My little brother and his friends, when they were teenagers, would hear it when they were out there doing whatever it was they shouldn't be doing. They didn't know what it was, so they named it Narf.
Sometimes Narf would let out a terrifying scream instead, and scare the pants off them. Eventually, we figured out that Narf was a bobcat, and not some sort of hobgoblin.

(17,022 posts)It sounds like a dog that's being abused. I wouldn't like to hear that at night, either.

(142,217 posts)when the foxes are out and people aren't familiar with their "scream". She has a black lab who obviously senses them and will suddenly start barking at them (from inside) in the middle of the night.

I couldn't believe it didn't freak them out!
Yes - a scream that kind of sounds like a garbled, high pitch (woman's?) scream!
