Generally they don't start laying until around January 15. Dec 31 is the earliest in my memory. Bees came out to start foraging Christmas day. They've been arising earlier every year.

(6,259 posts)Home fresh eggs are the best. Are your chickens new or did they just start back after taking the winter off?

(6,259 posts)even though I was in southern California. I'm in Virginia now and am planning on getting some chicks this spring. It will be a whole new thing here, a different climate, different predators, etc. but I'm looking forward to the fresh eggs again. It's so fun watching them, too. They can be such goofballs. Eleven is a lot! I'm going to start with six, I think. Maybe I'll expand later on. I'm also interested in guinea hens because I hear they're good for tick control.
