Just wanted to let folks know not to give up - I finally got through on their "my payment" and it said my check will be mailed April 24th. Should have been deposited, but whatever - I'll take it! It was 1:30 in the morning when I finally got through, and received an answer and not an error message. We'll see, though ...Okay. First, I heard if you do NOTHING, and have your SS income deposited to your bank account, they will automatically deposit this money by direct deposit.
Second, I heard that you need to file a 2019 tax return. So I did on free turbo-tax. Nothing owed, nothing refunded.
3rd I heard that it isn't necessary to file a return. If your banking info is where your SS is direct-deposited, all should be fine and the money will be deposited directly to that account.
So today I checked at the IRS site for "Get My Payment" and it said that they didn't have my banking info, even though that is how my SS income is deposited. So I tried to fill out their form, providing my information. Long story short, There is a problem. AND they are having technical difficulties.
Can't call. No local IRS offices are open.
WTF now? Any suggestions?

(10,885 posts)I have no idea why I received a paper check. The SSA has my bank info for my Direct Deposit, and I filed taxes for both 2018 (paid) and 2019 (0/0). The "Get My Payment" feature showed my check to be mailed on the 24th. I had it in hand on the 22nd.

Sounds like we need someone like Maddow or a journalist to get a reliable answer.

My ex, who got laid off from her job of 22 years last week got her $1200 in the bank this morning. She applied for SS on Friday, so maybe she benefitted for not being a SS recipient yet?
I just checked the "get My Payment" site, and yeah, CANNOT WIN, here's what I get back:

My rage at him just continues to grow and grow. Luckily, unless Hair Furor stops Social Security, we're doing OK and don't really NEED the $$. We were just going to keep it in the bank for our next travels, whenever that may be. My son is a different story, he desperately needs his and got a paper check and he can't get in to add his information either.

(9,809 posts)Today, the Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) launched a new web tool to allow for quick registration for the COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments to those that dont normally file a tax return.
Here's some information from the IRS:
How do I use the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info tool?
For those who dont normally file a tax return, the process is simple and only takes a few minutes to complete. First, visit IRS.gov, and look for Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here. Then provide basic information including Social Security number, name, address, and dependents. The IRS will use this information to confirm eligibility and calculate and send an Economic Impact Payment. Using the tool to get your payment will not result in any taxes being owed. Entering bank or financial account information will allow the IRS to deposit your payment directly in your account. Otherwise, your payment will be mailed to you.
Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info is secure, and the information entered will be safe. The tool is based on Free File Fillable Forms, part of the Free File Alliances offerings of free products on IRS.gov.
Who should use the Non-Filers tool?
This new tool is designed for people who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who dont receive Social Security retirement or disability benefits or Railroad Retirement benefits. Others who should consider the Non-Filers tool as an option, include:
Lower income: Among those who could use Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info tool are those who havent filed a 2018 or 2019 return because they are under the normal income limits for filing a tax return. This may include single filers who made under $12,200 and married couples making less than $24,400 in 2019.
Veterans beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients: The IRS continues to explore ways to see if Economic Impact Payments can be made automatically to SSI recipients and those who receive veterans disability compensation, pension or survivor benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs and who did not file a tax return for the 2018 or 2019 tax years. People in these groups can either use Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info option now or wait as the IRS continues to review automatic payment options to simplify delivery for these groups.
Social Security, SSDI and Railroad Retirement beneficiaries with qualifying dependents: These groups will automatically receive $1,200 Economic Impact Payments. People in this group who have qualifying children under age 17 may use Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info to claim the $500 payment per child.
Students and others: If someone else claimed you on their tax return, you will not be eligible for the Economic Impact Payment or using the Non-Filer tool.
Coming next week: Automatic payments begin
Eligible taxpayers who filed tax returns for either 2019 or 2018 and chose direct deposit of their refund will automatically receive an Economic Impact Payment of up to $1,200 for individuals or $2,400 for married couples and $500 for each qualifying child. Individuals who receive Social Security retirement or disability benefits, SSDI or who receive Railroad Retirement benefits but did not file a return for 2019 or 2018 will automatically receive a payment in the near future.
Also coming next week: Get My Payment shows Economic Impact Payment date, helps with direct deposit
To help everyone check on the status of their payments, the IRS is building a second new tool expected to be available for use by April 17. Get My Payment will provide people with the status of their payment, including the date their payment is scheduled to be deposited into their bank account or mailed to them.
An additional feature on Get My Payment will allow eligible people a chance to provide their bank account information so they can receive their payment more quickly rather than waiting for a paper check. This feature will be unavailable if the Economic Impact Payment has already been scheduled for delivery.
More Information on Economic Impact Payments
The IRS will post additional updates on IRS.gov/coronavirus on these and other issues.

(9,605 posts)I don't usually file a tax return, but I did this time for 2019 because I thought I needed to.
Clearly fogged in
(1,943 posts)It took a few times, and finally by entering the hyphens in the SSN field, and dashes on the dob the info was accepted.
The site informed me that my banking information was needed - on 2018 form 1040 it is line 20b, c, and d
it was correct on my 1040 and I had overpaid in 2018; why they didn't have it makes no sense

(10,138 posts)it seems to be kind of hit and miss as to who has already received verses who hasn't
I "think" the no banking info is going out like an error message ,cause I have heard the same locally from a couple of friends today, I think the system is just overloaded
try checking in the middle of the night if you can, the system shouldn't be as busy then

(7,235 posts)as of today. Have not filed a 2019 return yet. Did file one in 2018.
One of my sons has never let the IRS have access to his bank account, he waits for the check in the mail. He tried to use "get my payment" and couldn't connect until the fourth try. There was then a problem, so he gave up for now.

(24,259 posts)From all I've been reading if you didn't need to file for the last 2 years but you get Soc Security (Retirement and Disability) the stimulus will be deposited into the same account where you normal monthly deposit goes within the next couple of weeks. If you had to file last or this year and have done do you'll probably get your funds this week like others who aren't on SS already are.
Here's a fairly clear write up that matches other info I've found so far...

Though 80 million Americans are expected to get their payments this week, others will be getting their checks later in the month and even further into the year. Heres an estimated timetable, according to federal lawmakers, as of early April.
The IRS plans to send the first wave of payments in the week starting April 13, according to an expected timeline from the House Ways and Means Committee.
The tax authority will transmit the payments via direct deposit, using the banking information it has on file for taxpayers 2018 or 2019 tax returns, the timetable said.
That first wave will include Social Security recipients who filed tax returns and included direct deposit information on their returns, according to the House Ways and Means estimated timeline.
The second wave will go to Social Security recipients who did not file 2018 or 2019 returns and receive their benefits through direct deposit.
In early May, the IRS will start mailing paper checks to households, at a rate of 5 million per week. The paper checks will first go to the households with the lowest adjusted gross incomes, and continue upwards.
It could take up to 20 weeks to mail out all those checks, according to the House Ways and Means timetable.
The process could be delayed for several days because President Donald Trump wants his signature to appear on those paper checks, according to a Washington Post report. The Treasury Department told the Washington Post there wouldnt be any delay as a result of adding Trumps signature.
The IRS FAQs has some good info too...

I am not required to file a tax return, can I still use Get My Payment to check my payment status?
Depending on your specific circumstances, it may not be possible for you to access Get My Payment if you usually do not file a tax return. If your identity cannot be verified when answering the required security questions, you will not be able to use Get My Payment.
I receive a Form SSA-1099 or RRB-1099 and file a tax return. Can I use Get My Payment to check my payment status?
Yes, you will be able to use Get My Payment to check the status of your payment after you verify your identity by answering the required security questions.
I receive a Form SSA-1099 or RRB-1099 and do not file a tax return because I dont meet the income requirement to file. Can I use Get My Payment to provide my bank information to receive my EIP by direct deposit?
You will not be able to use Get My Payment to provide your bank account information because you did not file tax returns for 2018 or 2019. The IRS will use the information on the Form SSA-1099 or Form RRB-1099 to generate your payment. You will receive your payment as a direct deposit or by mail, just as you would normally receive your benefits

(6,991 posts)ALL of them qualify for the stimulus checks, because they all filed their income taxes for both years.
One friend didn't file his 2018 Income Taxes because he felt that getting back $1.00 Federal returns wasn't worth filing it, but he did file his 2019 income taxes a few weeks ago electronically (He told me that he will be receiving a whopping $3 this year in federal returns).
Several people I know got their stimulus deposits (Although pending at the time) on Friday, and now a majority of them haven't gotten anything. No word, no nothing. Something tells me that this is going to be a shit storm for many who are entitled to the stimulus money.
