Driver, 84, hits reverse by mistake and winds up parked atop another car

An 84-year-old driver accidentally reversed his car on top of another vehicle outside the John F. Kennedy Medical Center on Monday morning, Edison police said.

Authorities received a call around 10:45 a.m. about a two-car accident in which a Toyota was on top of an unoccupied parked Acura vehicle, said Edison Lt. Robert Dudash. The driver was not injured and no summons were issued.

“He was parked in front of the other car and mistakenly apparently put it in reverse as opposed to drive and in reverse drove right up onto the hood and ultimately the roof of this parked vehicle located directly behind him,” Dudash said.

It's simply not possible to accidentally put one in reverse.

More realistically, it's why drivers over age 70 or so should need to pass a new driving test every few years. I'm 72. When I lived in Kansas, every time you renewed your license you needed to pass a written test. They'd mail you a copy of the test and a booklet, and you could turn in the completed test once you got to the DMV. I always filled out out while waiting in line. Every so often there was a question I wasn't sure of, so I'd look it up in the book. I really appreciated being forced to renew some of that information every so often.
