This Texas teacher is helping make her students' menstrual cycles a little easier

This Texas teacher's goal is to provide everything she can for her students -- and that includes pads and tampons.

As an eighth grade teacher in Austin, Kylie DeFrance's students are between the ages of 12 and 14. This is the time that most girls start their menstruation cycle, according to The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Remembering what it's like to go through this phase herself, DeFrance began thinking of ways she could make it easier for her students, she told CNN.

"I want to provide them with what they need, whether that be a pencil or a tampon," DeFrance said.

"A lot of these scholars go home and are the parent to their siblings, and maybe can't go to the store that day," she continued. "Or, they can't afford the pad or tampon that would be best for them, or maybe they don't have a good relationship with their parents."

Her school provides only one type of pad, DeFrance said, so she began purchasing pads and tampons to give her students more options. She soon became the go-to teacher for all things menstruation.

It reminds me of an organization started by two young women in AL called "Women in Training, Inc." From their About page:

When Brooke Bennett learned a few years ago that there are girls who “spot” on their clothing because they cannot afford sanitary pads, she was very sad. “That’s not right,” Brooke told her twin sister, Breanna. “Every girl needs menstrual items to stay clean and healthy during their period.”

Together, on their 12th birthday in July 2019, the girls started Women in Training, Inc. (WIT), a youth empowerment organization. WIT’s signature program is the WITKITS Campaign to help alleviate period poverty among the 25% of American young people who skip school or miss work because they cannot afford menstrual products.

That’s such a critical time in most girls’ lives so every bit of help is appreciated. When I was in 6th grade everything was so secretive about what should be a normal part of life. I’m betting some girls don’t even have a woman in their lives to guide them though this event. Kylie DeFrance is a saint.

and claim that she is interfering with the parents' authority, and of course it is the teachers' union fault.
