The day Hillary visited the neighborhood, Ossie Lewis proudly displayed a sign in her front yard: Black Votes Matter.

For the retired postal worker, who at 88 is old enough to have lived through the Jim Crow era, this message was personal. Lewis couldn’t vote in her native Texas long ago because of a poll tax designed to keep blacks at home.

Since moving to Omaha in 1960, Lewis says, she has voted in every election. She even spent years working at polling places around Omaha. She wouldn’t dream of skipping a presidential race and wants people — blacks in particular — to vote.

So does Hillary Clinton, who came to Lewis’ north Omaha neighborhood on Monday. It’s no coincidence that the Clinton campaign chose a part of town that has a high concentration of black residents.
