The Black Panther, is the first black superhero to show up in American mainstream comics (Marvel Comics, 1966). This is long before Falcon (Marvel Comics, 1969), Green Lantern John Stewart (DC Comics, 1971) or Luke Cage (Marvel Comics, 1972). His solo movie comes out in February 2018. Long story short, it looks like its going to be a good movie.
People, are excited. Folks in social media have been frequently talking about what are they wearing or appearing as for this movie. Some people showed off Coming to America characters. Other people stated other powerful black identities, fictional or otherwise. Me? I was thinking of showing up as Black Dynamite. Being that technically I can show up as myself regardless (I am, the Soul Brother #1 of a Kind as is) I really hope folks were serious. I really do want to see everyone, black and proud, show up cosplaying as other black characters or historical (or modern!) figures. The movie Black Panther to get the Star Wars treatment? With fans left and right cosplaying to the blockbuster weekend!? As a movie buff and anti-racism abolitionist photojournalist, the beauty and love-overload of the scene alone would be so fierce, my soul would force manly tears.
Unfortunately, everyone doesnt share the same sentiment concerning this movie. Why, you ask? Because of this:
White people, are totally butt-hurt right now. Whiteness, is crying. Why?
A lot of the Whiteness critique comes from the casting call to them, I suppose, theres not enough white people in this movie.

(5,043 posts)Broflakes are people, generally but not always white, straight men, who interpret any cultural phenomenon that isn't centered around them to be a personal affront and insult.
as another DUer explained:
Broflake: Why isn't there a parade for straight people?
Me: OMG - what a precious broflake you are!
There are 2 white male actors fercryinoutloud.

(3,093 posts)Interesting observations. I am such a fan of the superhero movies and a lover of comic books. I am so looking forward to it. The cast is phenomenal. There are a lot of butthurt people out there about this though. I am really excited to see this happen. It's a great opportunity to showcase the talents of spite many fabulous actors and actresses. As far as the racist and ignorant people that are butthurt, they can fuck off.

(113,130 posts)so we might as well give them something to be upset about, like a comic book movie featuring people with dark skin and that shuns palefaces except maybe as extras or minor characters. Haw awful. Bless their hearts.
I dislike comic book movies in general so I won't see this one. And no, I haven't seen the latest Star Wars, either.
Now if it was a movie about the real life Black Panthers, I might. That would be a great story. Hollywood just isn't ready to tell it.

(37,748 posts)Seems what you allege as a mere straw-man is in fact, a real figure. A quick search reveals a butt-load of irrational yet mainstream criticism against the movie by white people for not casting enough white people. Not necessary to provide links as it's as simplistic to find these as is a recipe for meatloaf. Go ahead... give it a try!
Or, you can simply cry straw-man and pretend commas are relevant...

(37,748 posts)Then it seems your used of 'straw-man' was in and of itself, an unsupported allegation. Or, as you said, a "completely made-up unsupported statement..."

(18,124 posts)oh hell no....is why people in the white community are up in arms at this idea. Wolverine, Batman, Superman...cool...keeps white supremacy in it's place, atop the food chain, now an African-american sharing space atop that food chain? Oh hell no!!!!!!.
People in amerika have always been insanely sick when it comes to showing a person of color in any position that millions could possibly see that depicts a hero who is not white....and the sad fact is that those howling the loudest are the most ignorant and stupid sort to call themselves adult or even part of a human race that should be as one. Those howling are the lowest form of vermin crawling the earth. Period.

(18,124 posts)this movie shows that people will fight back when injustice is heaped upon them generation after generation for NO OTHER reason than SKIN COLOR, I think.

(4,035 posts)We've been waiting ages for a Marvel movie that doesn't have a white man called Chris or Robert playing the main character (and I say that as a huge Captain America fan). So many fantastic actors, and very intriguing for me as a history buff.
I just listened to podcasts on the Amazons of Dahomey - I wonder if they are they inspiration for the Dora Milaje?

(21 posts)he'll be amazing on film, and he's amazing in his comic adventures. Wakanda looks as fantastic onscreen, as it does in the comics.
Show the character some extra love, and get whatever you can that has the "Black panther"
