(12,470 posts)Always always show my hands and wait for instructions. Been doing that since i was taught to drive almost 50 years ago.
There are videos of blacks doing that and then shot when they were told to get their licenses.

(57,495 posts)officer though, as did Philando Castile.
He was totally complying with his murderer, doing everything he was asked to do. That cop gave him conflicting instructions. First, after lawfully being told by Castile that Castile had a weapon and carry permit, the cop told him not to reach for it, which he didn't. Then the cop told him to show his ID, which he attempted to do but was then pumped full of bullets by the panicking officer who had given him him the two sets of instructions.
To me it's still unfathomable that that scared, cowardly murderer was found not guilty, especially in light of the two tapes the nation has seen of the incident.

(46,973 posts)most cop shootings are with local cops who don't have as much, sometimes they are rookies or just irrationally scared of black people. Some are just plain racist. Police harassment of black people and thinking they are criminals goes back hundred years or more. Some idiots in some areas call the cops as soon they see a black or brown person in their neighborhood, including uniformed delivery drivers and utility workers.
Plenty of people have done everything you described and still got shot and killed.
Interstate drivers get pulled over more often, just in case they might get lucky and catch a drug dealer.

(142,316 posts)would have a cop conjure up an imaginary gun pointed at them, causing a "fear for life" response, and an automatic death sentence for the driver.
We were taught to just put both hands separate and visible on top of the steering wheel, and then sit and wait for instructions.

(24,604 posts)From what I have seen, if you are black you just can't win in many cases. Reaching for your wallet when told to can get you shot, and the cop gets off scott free.

(11,365 posts)and there is no justice for it. Not even a little.
Depresses me. And makes me wish my friends and people I don't know of different races didn't have so much to fear.

(23,834 posts)Your starting point is already ahead of the game. Your advice condescending and in some cases could be dangerous -- roll down the window and stick your arm out? C'mon now.

(37,748 posts)"It's just a fact of the matter that if you drive 100,000 miles or more a year you are going to get pulled over more than people who drive ten times less than that..."
Unless a particular demographic that drives ten times less is pulled over ten times more often than is normal.
