(1,399 posts)I sometimes think I am the only black man on this site who will speak truth to the party's post-1992 willingness to throw a lot of us under the bus (or in federal prison, or on death row, or off the path to financial security) to get white suburban votes, and that it costs us elections, especially in 2016, BUT there will NEVER come a day when Republicans will do anything other than try to lynch us. I would throw myself in the Mississippi before I vote for ANY Republican.

(4,873 posts)but I'd love it if the Repubs started getting behind projects that benefit African Americans, and people of color were in the position of taking taking taking and just smiling to themselves "as if this is going to make up for everything that's happened up to now". Things like getting huge grants for BLM or raising money for African American candidates in local elections. I'd like to see white Repub candidates giving big parties and inviting black voters and being so obvious in their courtship that it would make your teeth hurt, and then not getting a single additional black vote.

(8,008 posts)I cast my first Presidential ballot as a teenaged New Yorker against Jimmy Carter because I did not believe in the New South. I was wrong.
Nonetheless, the doctrine of "No permanent friends or enemies, only permanent interests" seems wise in the long run. The Compromise of 1877 was collusion among Democrats and Republicans that spawned Jim Crow and stultified America for a century.
However, given current political demographics (Almost 70% of Americans identify as white and half of those give Trump his 35% approval rating) I can foresee no realignment.
