(8,709 posts)My niece spent a year in India as part of her university study. For a while, she sent back glowing pictures of beautiful camaraderie with classmates and of people they'd met. But she soon found that wandering around alone was more than unsettling as a black girl because of the things cited in the article. I didn't find that surprising but am surprised by the author's experience in Swaziland. My SIL, niece's mom, was a Peace Corps volunteer in South Africa for many years back in the '80s was a little shocked by the author's experience - "spies," "fake American" by being non-white. Wow. Makes us wonder if the attitude was there all along or what might have changed or maybe there aren't as many people of color volunteering anymore.
