Julius Rosenwald

He basically created Sears Roebuck, after both founders were side-lined. Sears is dying now.

Julius Rosenwald made a fortune, became a philanthropist, spent much money on various charities ... in the early 20th century.

invented matching grants ...

and built 5,700 schools for black children in the early 20th century in the days of segregated schooling.

So many on DU are attacking Sears now for doing the wrong things, which may be possibly true, but the legacy of their founders is pretty impressive and worth celebrating.
