The institutional participation or enabling of these outrages is as present today as it was back then.
Just my opinion, but I've told my kids what we've been witnessing in their generation is white people pulling every institutional lever they can find to maintain political and economic power. Their primal fear drives it all:
Gerrymandering
Voting restrictions
Voting machine irregularities
Controlling women's bodies
Expanding money in politics
Tax laws that favor the haves over have nots
Anti immigrant laws
Police brutality and over policing of minorities
Until my generation of white guys loses power (I'm a 56 year old white guy), these institutionally racist activities will continue.
The Democratic Party in my opinion, needs to be actively engaged in developing and pushing policies that ALL OF THE PEOPLE believe will help them. There's a reason Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Mayor Pete, etc. get little support from non-whites. The outreach isn't there or there's a tin ear when it comes to minority community communication and concerns.
Thanks for the post.
I love this kind of history reading.
