Maybe it's because threads in General Discussion on race keep sinking to the bottom, but I get the feeling that a lot of white people are ready for George Floyd and the protests to go away.
It's a gut feeling. I can't explain it. The only thing that it might be about is "it's an election year" and how there is so much "don't go to far, don't alienate the voters". There's always a reason to slow it down.
I guess, and this is the cynic in me, I am waiting for the next deaths, because there will be more, and I want to see if white people protest.
I am one of those people who does not see how changing symbols, removing symbols, changes how people feel. I want bold change. I want history books rewritten. I want entire police districts fired. I want Qualified Indemnity overturned so that police can be charged and sued. I want their lives ruined. And those lying, manipulative, racist white women - I want their lives ruined as well.
I don't know how to change an overt racist, but I want them back in the closet.

(96,523 posts)In fact based on the link supplied in the OP, it neither supports or doesn't support the OPs assumptions

(6,278 posts)The intention of the link was simply to point out that this sh*t has been going on for years.
I truly do not understand why, all of a sudden, George Floyd's death is the one that has incited white people to protest.
guillaumeb
(42,649 posts)That is a good question.
How many needless deaths at the hands of racist police personnel are necessary to inspire people to act?

(47,438 posts)With the man begging for mercy and crying to his dead mother. All of the deaths are horrors, but this one was more heart wrenching.
And I'll add the total lack of concern for George Floyd while torturing him. Many of the other murders involve a brief moment. This one went on and on, and the effer didn't give a shis.

I'm going by the number of people who said that it was what they planned to do because they didn't like what I posted.

(4,171 posts)it's no where near time to stop this momentum. Seeing those monuments/statues coming down in Richmond right now is inspiring. I hope enough white citizens stay fired up like they have been.

(1,731 posts)That's why organized sustained protest is so important. Those tactics and the response to them made our plight impossible to ignore. We know not everyone who claims to be an ally really wants to help or be uncomfortable in any way. It's okay. Not much really happens in this space anyways. The streets, boardrooms, and courtrooms is where all of this will continue to be fought out.
Stay well, qwlauren35.

Not "white people".
Is that better?

(22,336 posts)because people need to respond with that understanding. This group is for like-minded people. If people want to debate, they can take it elsewhere.
There always seems to be a "don't alienate the voters" group, and not just before elections. They're the same of people who say they aren't opposed to protests, but every protest is the wrong way to protest.

(23,423 posts)I'm aware and respectful of the emotional labor especially BW invest in WP (which I am), so I understand if you and others choose to disregard this.
But your last point, about wishing they'd go back in the closet, I'm wondering how prevalent a wish that is. As much as a WP can, I can understand what you're saying -- the overt hate and viciousness must be unbearable. Yet I've also heard over the years that BP would prefer an overt racist over the less obvious racist, or even the insidiousness of the bias many white liberals hold without realizing it, because at least a BP knows where they stand with the overt racist.
I also can't see what I'm typing because my computer is messing up, so I hope this isn't fully of typos...lol. Thank you!

(6,278 posts)I'm going to suggest that you post it as its own topic.
I am a Northerner, and not used to overt racism. For me, put it back in the closet includes no "F@ck you, ni@@er" comments, no more police brutality because they can't get away with it, no more white power rallies.
Your mileage may vary.
