WINNEBAGO, Neb. (AP) — The federal government has awarded $519,033 to the Winnebago Tribe to help improve education on the reservation in northeast Nebraska.

The federal grant is part of a larger program to better prepare students for college and careers. The U.S. Education Department recently awarded more than $5.3 million nationwide.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan said the government is working to create new opportunities for American Indian youth to succeed.

In Nebraska, the Winnebago Tribe’s Ho-Chunk community development corporation will oversee the grant.
