John Trudell, activist and poet, dies

http://www.usnews.com/news/entertainment/articles/2015/12/08/american-indian-activist-poet-john-trudell-dies-at-69

LOS ANGELES (AP) — John Trudell, who was a spokesman for American Indian protesters during their 1969 occupation of Alcatraz Island and later headed the American Indian Movement, died Tuesday. He was 69.

Trudell, who also was a poet and actor, died of cancer at his home in Santa Clara County in Northern California, where he was surrounded by friends and family, said Cree Miller, a trustee for his estate.

In some of his last words, Trudell said expressions of concern and love for him have been "like a fire to my heart," according to Miller.

Such a great human.

It was at the UCLA Pow Wow, where I met him through a friend of mine who is very active in the Native American film industry.

I remember him as being kind of stand offish, at first, but once he had taken my measure we spent a nice time just walking and talking a very casual conversation. I don't even remember what we talked about, but it remains one of my best memories.

"Indians are Jesus. Hangin' on the cross. Hangin' on the cross!"

And not a word about this in our local cat box liner.

Rest in Peace John Trudell. Your days of sadness and sorrow are over now. Mitakuye Oyasin.

I remember those days on Alcatraz. A bunch of the people that took over Alcatraz ended up jailed in Martinez, Calif. and I went to the hearing at the courtroom one of the days it was going on. It left a tremendous impression on me and I had an idea that things weren't quite right for Indian people at too young of an age.

John Trudell left behind a powerful message that will never be forgotten and yes, I too am heartbroken to hear of his untimely death.

And yes, truly. It bothers me that no mention of his passing has shown up anywhere except for obscure news sources. I hope he really is in a better place. He certainly deserves it.
