In early January 1923, white mobs destroyed the black town of Rosewood FL. The true death toll is unknown, ranging from less than ten to over a hundred. Survivors fled and did not return; the story was largely lost in the silence on all sides, until 60 Minutes did a piece in the early 1980s. A lobbying effort before the legislature finally produced a limited bill compensating survivors; this passed in 1994, but not all funds were claimed
