(1,938 posts)[In a section of the book called "Pleas to the Choir and Beyond," nine chapters offer pleas to various categories of Americans including the very youth, first-time voters, and those who vote for person over party. It leads off with Chapter 25, the text of which is given below in its entirety.]
WE MUST DESTROY the Republican Party.
By we, I mean all Americans of sanity, compassion, and understanding.
It is essential to do that so that the damaging course the GOP has pursued
will be reversed. We need to weaken them swiftly so that the next and God
help us, far more effective and compelling would-be dictator they will
surely eventually try to force upon us has no chance whatever of taking
power.
Essential it is too that the Democrats genuinely become the people's party.
The American system, running so smoothly since its inception, has clearly
failed to provide safeguards against our takeover by authoritarians.
Once the ship is righted, we need to address that in ways yet to be
determined.
Elsewhere, I've touched upon toxic and righteous stories about who we
are as a nation, and how easy, tempting, and beguiling it is to adopt some
universal story whole-hog without much thought at all.
One of my favorite empowering stories is this:
Because Trump so baldly lied when he took the oath of office at the
inauguration, the blatant, oft repeated, and proliferating lies that
followed render his subsequent acts moot, null, and void.
In the instant he so egregiously lied to us, breaking a solemn vow he
never intended to honor this dishonorable human being incapable of
honor he nullified his Presidency.
Mistake me not.
I'm aware that in strictly legal terms this foul hound of a motherfucker
is President. But our belief in that goes a long way to normalizing it,
and that's something I'll never do. There is no #45. Not yet. We have no
president at all right now.
Trump is president of nothing. So stop believing the myth that he has
power. He only has as much power as we cede to him, individually and as a
conglomeration of citizens.
He broke his contract with us, which called upon him to serve all the
people, not a subset of them.
The President of the United States is an employee of the people, intended
to serve, not tyrannize over.
You, as one of those people, are an employer of whoever sits in the Oval
Office.
Now, picture yourself firing him and hounding his fat fucking ass out of
the White House. He's incompetent and incapable. He's unacceptable. He
doesn't do the job he was hired for. He operates entirely in bad faith.
Bad faith is all he knows. Every day, he tries out new ways to destroy the
fabric of our nation, whittling away at its foundations.
Please do not give up.
Don't shrug your shoulders and opine with a sigh, Oh well, we're stuck
with him until the next Presidential election.
If enough of us--and I'm talking about a massive number, enough to wake us
from the mass delusion that we're stuck with him--fire Trump and deny him a
legitimacy he doesn't deserve, we can drive him into oblivion now!
When a nation falls into a perilous situation, one that threatens its
existence, its citizens must start to think and act outside the usual
constraints of thought and behavior.
We are there now.
Civil disobedience has become once more imperative.
The survival of our nation depends on it.
