The Dead Are Arising by Les & Tamara Payne

I've been reading a chapter or two every day of this doorstop Pulitzer Prize winning bio of Malcolm X. We've had the autobiography, but this account fills in what Malcolm wouldn't have known about his parents before he came along or his early childhood, the things he didn't remember for whatever reason, and even the things he elided for his own book. The more complete information is welcome and fascinating, but much of it is quite depressing. Hence why I can handle only a couple of chapters a day.

Mr Payne was a groundbreaking black journalist who unfortunately died while writing this book. Thankfully, Tamara Payne was her father's research assistant, so she was able to complete it.
