The Release Date for A Memory of Light Has Been Set

The first novel in Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time®, The Eye of the World, was released on January 15, 1990. Now more than twenty years later, Tor Books is thrilled to announce the official publication date for the final novel in the series.

A Memory of Light will release on January 8, 2013, in the final month of the Year of the Dragon.

4. Cheer up! My neighbor and a friend of my husband, both of whom

study such things, say that December 21, 2012 is NOT the end of the world, but is the beginning of the age of enlightenment. Neighbor says that on 12-21-2012 the 144,000th person will become enlightened. One hundred forty-four thousand is the tipping point which will cause the whole Earth to become enlightened. (We are heading for the Age of Aquarius, remember. You know:

2. Great! So if I start my re-reading of the whole series in say, July or August...

5. Just an FYI (because I didn't know this either until recently), but Brandon Sanderson

is Mormon and anti-gay, so if that concerns you, you might want to make sure you buy a used copy. I'm not thrilled with the idea of royalties on a book I bought being used to support stuff like Prop. 8.

I'm not saying I'm a fan of his position but he is a far cry from people like Orson Scott Card.

2) Looking back on it now, I find that—in speaking from a position of privilege—I speak of some things in a way that is likely offensive. These sorts of tones are very hard to avoid when speaking about a minority class from the perspective of one in the majority. I'm not certain I could write it now in a way that cut out that tone entirely, but I could probably do far better. If I casually offend, I apologize. Over the years, I've grown more and more aware of how the tone and biases of one like myself (white, male, straight) can itself be part of the problem.

3) I have changed my stance on gay marriage somewhat. After a great deal of soul searching, thought, and discussion, I now believe that the best way to approach this is to push for ALL state unions to be civil unions. I believe we should establish what the state grants a union—whether it be straight or gay—and apply those rights universally to all.

Marriage, I believe, should become an entirely religious term. Marriages should be performed by churches. In short, I believe that we should "Render unto Caesar that which is Ceasar's, and Render unto God that which is God's."

This would mean a great overhaul of civil code, but I find it the only solution my conscience will allow me to advocate. I cannot be deaf to the pleas of gay couples who want important things, such as hospital visitation rights, shared insurance, and custody rights.

7. Yeah, I've seen that too, and I do appreciate that he's a far cry from

the virulent jerk that OSC is. However, what he's written there still leads me to believe that he would stand against in support of legislation against gay marriage, as long as (like Prop 8) it was against gays having access to the civil institution called "marriage", and wasn't against civil unions or something. But others might believe differently. Just thought I'd put the info out there.

what he's written would indicate that he's against any civil/legal institution "marriage" gay or straight.

The legal recognition would be civil unions for everyone. No marriage would have a legal implication, so could be performed or not by different religious bodies or, presumably, just a gathering of friends. It would become sort of like "baptism" in the sense that it means what the participants say it means and not anything legal.

I think I like that.

Seriously? That seems a bit excessive since the hardback is January 9th of 2013.

I'm one of those readers who can't take a large tome around with me all day. I buy an ebook to carry around with me, and a hardback to place in my bookcase of the major authors I follow. In this case I'll be left with no reason to purchase the ebook. How is that a good marketing idea on Tor's part?

With the last book they had a month delay for the ebook. I waited until the ebook came out and bought both. However, lots of pirated copies of the ebook were all over the web by then. I just waited out of respect for Jordan and the years he'd invested into the series before he passed.

I can't help but think this isn't the best approach for Tor to be taking. It just seems to be begging people to chose either one or the other, rather than both.
