Chiroptera

Apparently, last night
there was a giant hatch.
Thousands of tiny bugs, just specks,
have invaded my porch.

I showed my uncle the writhing black mass
which prompted a conversation about bats.

When I moved into my house 29 years ago
two bats appeared,
reliably,
after sunset,
at dusk.

How I looked forward to those flying foxes!
Sadly, none have appeared for years.
Did you know one flittermouse
can eat up to 1000 insects an hour?

Uncs relayed his own tale
of when he was renting a house.
He suspected there were bats in the attic,
so he stood outside one night to spy.
He spotted little faces looking out,
then they, en masse, took to the sky.
He never told;
he was on their side.

all the bugs and then late in the evening
during the cooler air, out they come

blind as they are, using echo location
as their incredible tool
why, if you ever dissected one,
it's nothing more than a rodent, say a rat with wings.

And they are plentiful in the cool evening air,

As well as amazing, living on a different kind of planet
in some sense of the word.

I love your poem here, RSherman, quite original.

Peace!
