SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER

It was my turn to play the organ at church today.
I grew up Methodist, so am unfamiliar with the Lutheran liturgy.
There are 13 times during the service that I am required to play
(16 if we have communion).
When the seasons change,
the liturgy does too.
Sometimes Pastor forgets to tell me.
I sit at the organ unprepared.

Uncle Dave was this morning’s lector.
He was supposed to read the First Reading,
followed by a Psalm, read responsively,
and end with the Second Reading,
at which point I play the “Alleluia”.
He skipped the Psalm, so I did not know what to do.

During the Sending Song
the congregation was not singing
the same words that were on my sheet music.
They were kind of quiet.
Were they unfamiliar with the hymn?
I looked in the hymnbook after church was over.
Ugh. There was a whole second page
which contained a refrain.

I console myself with the fact
that at least I play for free.
