Looking for a certain book (post apocalyptic?)

I'm hoping someone can help me find a particular book.
It's about a boy (teenager?) who leaves New York on a cross country journey after some sort of apocalypse.
I thought the title was "Danny", but searching comes up empty.

I'm sure I have a paperback edition somewhere in a box in the basement. I really don't remember the book, but I do remember enjoying it, and the title and author have stuck in my mind.
