I know its not Anne McCaffrey nor Christopher Stasheff
Story line involved from what I recall a guy going to a planet as some sort of agent and he had to then escape the planet at which point he used his powers he had developed to keep the aliens from capturing him and the ship he was escaping on.
Read it back in the mid 80s but for the life of me I cannot recall the author or title.

You would think there would be a larger demand here since it is a city with a teaching hospital but clearly there is not.
