The state took his AR-15 away after he beat up a coworker last year, but he managed to get his hands on two handguns. Two days ago, Limbaugh murdered Davis (California) Officer Natalie Corona, 22, as she worked a traffic collision in the college town in Central California. Limbaugh fired multiple shots at Corona, motorists and pedestrians, and firefighters responding to the scene before fleeing to his home nearby. Police attempted to negotiate his surrender over a period of hours, but Limbaugh shot himself and left a note demonstrating his conspiracy theories.

The murder of Officer Corona is tragic; her life was heroic. Here's some of it:

Supervisor Corona came to the US as a five year old from Mexico, and grew up in a family of farmworkers. Officer Corona was the kind of young person any community would be honored to call their own; same for her parents, siblings, and extended family.

And yet 50 years ago, J.M. Corona would have been one of the "scary" children crossing the border that the GOP and right wing in this country scapegoat on a daily basis for their own failures.

And the likes of Mr. Limbaugh, of course, absent being a murderer, would have been embraced as one of "theirs."

There's an old line from a Michener novel, where the protagonist is wondering aloud about those Americans who despite all of our nation's failings, suit up when called and put their lives on the line; as has been said, when one takes the oath, one is writing a blank check to Uncle Sam...

In the here and now, "where do we get such men and women?"

The point that a Mexican-American officer, who from all accounts is exactly the kind of dedicated individual society wants to have step forward to carry a badge, was gunned down in cold blood by a native-born white man, and it is safe to bet we will hear nothing from Trump and the racists of the GOP about it.

But yes, it it tragic.

9. All, the above are true, however....

...that same week a crab boat turned turtle crossing the bar off the Oregon coast and three men died. Statistics show that fishing for a living is nine times as dangerous as being a cop or firefighter. I haven't read a single detail about the lives or careers of any of those men. No stories about how they risk death daily to bring you sushi. Won't be no parade of boats escorting caskets while tearful citizens salute... And maybe that's part of the problems in America-a lack of respect and empathy for common working men and women.

Fishermen, or merchant mariners, or coastguardsmen, or USN sailors dying at sea because of a maritime accident (not warfare) is a tragedy, but has nothing to do with crime.

So why post this here? Are you just a contrarian?

Or do you think a 22-year-old who dedicated her life to serving her community doesn't deserve respect?

So if you have something to say about fishing, industrial accidents, labor issues, worker health, the state of Oregon, or whatever else ... create a thread on that topic, in an appropriate forum/group.

An obvious place to post such a thread would be any of the following Forums & Groups: Economy, Health, Working Poor, Economic Activism and Progressivsm, the "Oregon" group, or any one of a number of others...

Maybe it would even be read, and might give rise to a discussion.

But murder is not regarded as a workplace accident, so if you see no difference in someone dying on the job due to an accident, and someone being murdered by a man with a gun, you're really beyond reasoning with...
